a city united?

It’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming football’s coming home! Okay maybe not just yet… but *fingers crossed* Yes today it was confirmed that Manchester will be the only city outside London to have more than one stadium put forward in England’s bid to host the World Cup 2018 (or 2022). Impressive for ‘up North’ and well deserved as a city with a rich footballing heritage, fabulous facilities and the infrastructure to support an event of this scale. So what’s happens next? Well there is still 350 days to go until we find out whether England will be World Cup hosts. Bids will be submitted to FIFA by the 14th…

facebook vs privacy

This week I have been looking at different methods of content and discourse analysis. Although a very simplified form Wordle‘s provide a way of visualising the content of a piece of text. I thought it would be topical (considering this week’s changes in Facebook) to produce this Wordle using Facebook‘s current privacy policy. Interesting to note the hierarchy of the words… with privacy not featuring as often as the word information. Image c/o Wordle.net licensed under Creative Commons.

nominate your manchester mince pie-dol

If there is one thing I do well at Christmas it is stuffing myself silly – much to my waistlines disgust. One of my weaknesses is the humble mince pie (ideally with a chunk of cheese on the side)… so much so I had to put an embargo on consumption prior to December 1st. As a result I am on a personal mission to find Manchester’s most yummy, scrummy examples. So point me in the right direction and I’ll test and taste my way around the city until New Year. c/o hugovk licensed under Creative Commons.

introduction to community project: st ann’s hospice

As part of my Social Media MA I am undertaking a community project working with the St Ann’s Hospice – looking at their social media activities and delivery. For those unfamiliar with their work St Ann’s are the largest hospice in Greater Manchester – helping those with progressive and life-threatening diseases as well as supporting their families and carers. The most startling aspect of St Ann’s Hospice is how they are funded. Although the NHS contributes in the region of 35% towards annual running costs this still leaves £6 million (or £16,000 every day) to be found by donations from the generous general public. The monies come from a mix…

rainy city on wheels

Meet the Rainy City Roller Girls, Manchester’s very own roller derby team. For those of you not familiar with roller derby it is the UK’s fastest growing all girl contact sports – where the players have the most fantastic names… such as Feral Fairy, Missy Rascal and Vampire Panda in the case of the Rainy City girls – and involves roller skates, fish nets and kicking a bit of ass! c/o asw909 licensed under Creative Commons.

come into the parlour said the spider to the fly

There is a welcome new addition to Richmond Street and to Manchester’s Gay Village. The Parlour is a fab new watering hole bringing a little Northern Quarter retro chic into The Village. The bar is a former hairdressers that has been kitted out with decor reclaimed from a former Salford pub, which now forms the heart and soul of the The Parlour. While the ceiling is plastered with posters and if you can’t find your favourite one there the Parlour-ettes will pin in up. The Parlour are also doing their bit for charity mate by hosting a tea party for AmnesTea (on behalf of Amnesty International) on the 10th of…
