the class of 2010?

In conducting my research I asked participating museums to indicate the duration of time their organisation has had a presence on Twitter. Overwhelming the answer came back that tweeting was in the main a ‘new’ activity for these museums. With 60% stating that they had been tweeting for no more than 1 year, and 44% of these organisations for less than 6 months. Jim Richardson‘s global data taken in July 2009 (415 museums) and January 2010 (871 museums, estimated figure closer to 1,000) reflects a huge surge in museums using Twitter in the second half of 2009. Seemingly an upward tread that has continued into 2010. Interestingly however 37% of these…

craft-werk

Although not there tonight for the big reveal I am getting very excited about this year’s Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair. Once again the event is located in Spinningfields, which means near GBK equaling an extra thumbs up from me. Last year got my mitts on a Ruth Green print (pictured above) so looking forward to seeing what talented folk have for me to spend my pennies on this time around. Then if all that lovely craft gets you inspired don’t forget to check out Manchester Craft Mafia who have their next Crafternoon at  the Whitworth Art Gallery on December 18th 2010. Where festive decorations will be the order of the day. c/o H is…

the social network: the museums edition

Back in July I began collecting data as part of my dissertation looking at the role of social networking sites in audience development, using Twitter as a case study platform. As I have previously posted thank you to everyone who has taken part in this project so far (I couldn’t have done it without you!) Now the ‘results’ are in I thought it was high time I started sharing some of the data/findings back. So first up size and scale… Ninety one museums in total participated in the survey of which 71% are using one or more social networking platform on behalf of their institution – still leaving a significant…

are you sitting comfortably?…

Yes this looks just like the sort of fodder I peddle over on that t’other blog, but I wanted to have a tinker with some new tech. To see my story (as pictured above) in all it’s ‘glory’ you’ll have to hop over to Storify – as the embed functionality isn’t available to self-hosted simpletons like me just yet. Currently Storify is in beta and is billed as a platform to ‘create stories’ from social media. This could be tweets, Facebook posts, Flickr images, YouTube to name a few. It already seems an easy to use and attractive to look at service for collating posts to document events – take a look…
