the more unusual suspects

Manchester is recent times has become the star of the silver screen. The city has even been known to fake it as the Big Apple, thought that was Manhattan in Jude Law’s 2004 remake of Alfie then think again? Scenes were shot in the streets of the bohemian Northern Quarter! The same streets welcomed back Jude alongside Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. at the end of 2008 undertaking filming for Sherlock Holmes the is released at Christmas. Yet when it comes to the production of film the future might well be a product of Manchester’s creative fraternity. A perfect example are the talented bunch of graduates from this year’s Manchester Metropolitan Univerisity’s BA…

mellow yellow

If you live in Manchester you will be aware of the lack of our humble trams in the city centre recently. Multi million pound Metrolink investments have seen trams venturing no further than Manchester Victoria and St. Peter’s Square. These improvements alongside the ongoing and planned expansions to the Metrolink network will see Manchester’s public transport on the up… despite all the congestion charge kerfuffle last year. With the sun shining this week (yes it really is true… in Manchester would you believe) here’s the sunshine yellow rebrand for Metrolink c/o (the Northern Quarter’s very own) Hemisphere Design and Marketing Consultants Limited.  So the future’s bright, the future’s yellow… forget…

If you have been in and around the streets of Manchester recently you might have caught a glimpse of this little not so little chap on everything from billboards to buses. This nappy wearing lovely rampaging through Manchester is promoting the new Manchester Children’s Hospital. The campaign works perfectly for the fresh and funky look of the new hospital which opens this week, and will treat up to 35,000 children from across the region each year. So a big thumbs up to Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in both medical and marketing advances. For more information visit http://www.borninmanchester.co.uk

on the buses

Public transport… well no one could ever call it glamourous could they? As much as I wish that it was all like the recent Virgin Trains adverts – complete with ’80’s soundtrack… if only! However maybe I have got it all wrong as Urban Splash and chums (FAT Architecture in this case) over in New Islington (great little website) have been sexing up bus stops. Here’s the visuals to prove it… Turns out bus shelters can look rather pretty in pink – though I am not sure how many folks will be bathing in magenta rays on a grey, damp day in Manchester which we are known to have a few…

sneaker freak

I have a confession… I have been to the otherside… the old ‘enemy’, Liverpool. So why would I commit such a sin you may ask. Well, as a sneaker freak I was lured there by the current exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery Fashion V Sport – a touring exhibition that originally ran last year at the V&A in London. Fashion V Sport explores the relationship between global sports brands and high fashion – and what happens when the two collide – often with extraordinary but sometimes horrific results. As well as imparting perfect pub quiz triva regarding all-in-one football kits. Anyways this inspired me to ask my Tweeps for their top shops for trainer procurement in Manchester.…
